Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) combines the therapeutic effects of ketamine with evidence-based psychotherapy to support recovery from conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction, and eating disorders.

Many people turn to KAP when first-line treatments—like antidepressants or standard talking therapies—haven’t brought the change they hoped for. At its heart, KAP can help free people from old patterns helping them reconnect with themself and move forward with renewed clarity, openness, and self-compassion.

All the clinicians I work with are highly qualified professionals from medical, psychological, or psychotherapeutic backgrounds, each formally trained in ketamine-assisted therapy. You’re in safe, experienced hands.

What is ketamine?

Ketamine is an anesthetic drug that has been used safely in medical settings worldwide since the 1970s and is listed by the World Health Organization as an Essential Medicine.

At lower doses than those used in surgery, ketamine has very different effects. It can lift mood rapidly, ease symptoms of depression, and open access to altered or “non-ordinary” states of consciousness. Many people describe gaining new perspectives, a sense of release, or deeper self-understanding.

Ketamine can also enhance neuroplasticity—the brain’s capacity to form new connections—creating an opportunity for psychological growth and change.

Why combine ketamine with psychotherapy?

Used alone, these temporary effects of ketamine can bring short-term relief from common mental health problems. However when combined with psychotherapy in a well thought out protocol, its impact can be deeper and more enduring.

When repeated doses are used each week the effects of ketamine become more sustained making it easier to relflect on difficulties in new ways, explore new insights and loosen rigid patterns.  By having psychotherapy at the same time people find it far easier to engage with therapy and get a more from it, this can lead to longer lasting changes for client.

KAP is a blended intervention that relies on all of its components, it is the partnership between medicine and therapy that gives it its stregnth and as such we do not offer ketamine as a standalone treatment.

Who is KAP for?

KAP may help if you’re living with:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety disorders (including GAD, phobias, panic, social anxiety, and OCD)

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Addictions

  • Eating disorders

To be eligible, you’ll need to:

  • Be under the care of a UK-registered GP, and

  • Have tried at least two conventional treatments (for example, two antidepressants).

KAP may not be suitable if you have uncontrolled blood pressure, certain heart or liver conditions, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have specific mental-health presentations. If any apply, we’ll discuss your case carefully before deciding whether it’s safe to proceed.

What does treatment involve?

A course of KAP typically includes:

  1. Initial Medical Assessment
A prescribing clinician ensures treatment is safe and appropriate for you and oversees all medical aspects of care.

  2. Preparation Therapy
You and your therapist work together to clarify your goals, understand your history, and prepare for ketamine sessions. Some people choose a longer preparation phase before beginning.

  3. Ketamine Administration Sessions
Sessions take place in-clinic and last about three hours. Ketamine is given either as a lozenge or by intramuscular injection in a safe, monitored setting.

  4. Integration Therapy
The following day, you meet your therapist to process your experience and begin applying insights to everyday life.

Because ketamine’s direct effects are short-lived, weekly sessions are recommended to build a sustained neuroplastic and antidepressant response. Most people complete six sessions, supported by preparation and integration therapy. A follow-up evaluation with your prescribing clinician takes place about three weeks after the final dose.

Taking the next step

If you’re considering KAP and want to learn more, please get in touch. I’m always happy to offer time and advice to help you decide whether this approach is right for you.

Psychotherapy

I draw on a range of established evidence-based therapeutic approaches to work with mental health and addiction presentations. I have particular expertise in trauma-focused therapy, helping people process past experiences and develop greater psychological flexibility. Some clients choose conventional talk therapy, while others explore psychedelic-assisted approaches — we can work together to find the approach that best supports your needs.

Consultancy

I bring many years of experience as a supervisor, trainer, researcher, and clinical leadership. My consultancy work often focuses on supporting services to adopt innovative, evidence-based approaches, such as remote delivery, digitally assisted therapy, or psychedelic-assisted treatments. I work with organisations across the UK, Europe, and North America, offering expertise, strategic guidance, and connections within an international research and clinical network. If you’d like to explore how I can support your organisation, please get in touch.

Training/Supervision

I provide tailored supervision and training for individual therapists, clinics, and services. This may include one-to-one clinical supervision, training in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, or broader support in implementing progressive therapeutic approaches. My aim is to help practitioners and teams work with confidence, safety, and effectiveness in this evolving field. Please reach out to discuss your needs.
