Frequent Questions
How long is a typical psychotherapy session?
Talk therapy sessions typically last 50 minutes, but we can book an hour slot, giving us a few minutes at either end to take the pressure off. For some approaches, we will book longer sessions. For example, some approaches used to work with acute PTSD symptoms require 1.5-hour long sessions. If we decide that your therapy may benefit from the addition of psychedelic dosing sessions, these can be arranged using either Ketamine or Psilocybin. Due to legislation around the use of these compounds, we have to make arrangements for the administration sessions that I can discuss with you individually. Ketamine can be used off-label in the UK, and typically administration sessions last around 2 hours. Psilocybin cannot be used in the UK outside of research, and therefore we offer clients overseas options.
Can I source my own psychedelic compounds and use them with therapy?
You could, but I would recommend against this. The personal acquisition and use of these compounds is illegal in most countries, and you would be exposing yourself to the law in this regard. There are also some risks associated with the use of these compounds, particularly for some people with certain health presentations and you should be aware of these before making any decisions for yourself. If you are determined to take this approach, it is entirely your own decision, but I would be happy to offer preparation/integration therapy as harm reduction advice. However, I maintain that I don’t encourage this.
I went to a psychedelic retreat, and there wasn't adequate therapy afterward. Can I talk to you?
Absolutely! There is a growing well-being tourism industry around psychedelic retreats, some legal in other countries and some illegal in underground practices. There is very limited regulation in the field and some inadequate and sometimes actually dangerous practices. It is an increasingly common story to hear of people coming home from retreats feeling “undone” without any follow-up support. If this sounds familiar, or perhaps you’ve had a challenging recreational experience, please get in touch, and we can see if we can do something helpful.
I live a long way from you. Do you offer remote therapy sessions?
Yes, I have done a great deal of remote/video work, and I find it to work very well. I work with overseas clients as well as UK clients, so I’m used to navigating time zones.
What is the difference between supervision & consultancy?
Supervision focuses on supporting clinicians in their practice, while consultancy provides strategic guidance to businesses navigating the psychedelic therapy landscape.
What conditions do you specialise in treating?
I specialise in addressing common mental health problems and addiction through a range of therapeutic approaches, including psychedelic-assisted therapy. I view any mental health or addiction presentation “longitudinally,” meaning I work with clients to understand how their problems developed over the course of their life. Often this might highlight adverse or challenging early life experiences. I’m not heavily concerned with diagnostic categories and prefer to work with individual presentations. However, I understand the value of diagnosis at a service level in my consultancy work.
